Were you repeatedly bullied, shamed, blamed, or rejected by a parent, sibling, or other relative growing up or as an adult? Have you felt that your concerns about how certain family members were treating you were invalidated or dismissed, perhaps even by helping professionals or friends you counted on to understand? In this comprehensive introductory guide, Psychotherapist and Family Systems expert Rebecca C. It's one thing to know you're the black sheep, to have awareness your family is dysfunctional, and it's another thing entirely to fully realize and accept the impact that's had on you. I'm disabled because I had birth defects that didn't get caught in childhood. My mom said she assumed I was walking funny to get attention so she ignored it. I've been characterized as crazy and mentally ill, smeared to the entire extended family and wider community. And who wouldn't believe a psychologist and a minister? I even believed I had somehow ruined my family. My home growing up was pretty outside and ugly inside, and a war zone where sibling rivalry was both punished and encouraged through manipulation. But until maybe a year ago I would not have characterized my upbringing as abusive or neglectful. Now I realize it was both. This book is giving me a lexicon for exactly how messed up it all was.
